Email marketing is one of the most powerful marketing strategies to grow small businesses. One of the most effective tools for a successful email marketing strategy is a newsletter. 


What is an Email Newsletter?


A newsletter is an email that you send to your potential customers with content such as news, updates, and specific curated content from a topic the user signed up for. 


These are not the “standard” marketing emails such as “abandoned,” “buy,” or “join.” Instead, a newsletter focuses on providing valuable content for free. 


Well, this is a tool to keep the user engaged with your brand and keep your target audience updated with what is happening with your business. However, the purpose of a newsletter depends from business to business and their respective goals. 


Purpose of a Newsletter


Newsletter can be used for three different purposes: 


  1. Build Trust: Newsletters are not general emails, these are tailored emails that are designed and created as per the content your visitors had signed up for. This makes up for a great way to stay in touch and build trust with their target audience. 
  2. Branding & Marketing: When your audience is communicating and engaging with you directly, this helps with brand recall and helps you with the marketing of your future products/services. 
  3. Share Information: With a Newsletter you can share information with your customers about your company, and how your products/services are improving or how they can help make their lives better. This way the information does not feel forced and your audience remembers your brand.


When it comes to content you can build a newsletter about anything whether it is about a new product or any upcoming event. You can choose any theme/topic as long as the newsletter will be relevant to the customer. 


What Goes Into a Successful Newsletter for Small Businesses?


A successful newsletter consists of many things that are done the right way and it contributes to the success of the newsletter: 


  1. Catchy Intro: The first thing that will attract your reader is a catchy intro that captures the attention of your reader, and further engages them into the email content. For example Monday Morning Memo, here’s what successful entrepreneurs do, etc. 
  2. Engaging body of text: Once a reader starts reading your email, the next thing they will do is read your body of text. The body of text is crucial as it contains the message that you want to deliver to your audience. But too many small businesses make the mistake of putting out all text or they use too much graphic design. The best strategy is to use the best of both and ensure that the email does not break the reading flow of the reader. For example: Use a graphic where you want to show data or you want to show do’s and don'ts, this will help your business to keep your reader engaged. 


  1. Use a powerful CTA(Call to Action): Now you have engaged the user, and now you want to take further action based on your message. To make your CTA powerful you have to create the same that goes well with your marketing message or offer that you add. For example, if you are launching a new product along with an offer with a discount but that is available for a limited time, in such cases, you can use a call to action: offer lasts till, limited stock only. This CTA creates a FOMO(fear of missing out on a good offer) effect, and there are higher chances that the user will try to take an action based on your fear of missing out on a good deal. 


Make constant Efforts till you succeed!


Newsletters are a great way to keep your audience engaged and remember your brand. It gives you an opportunity to introduce your new products/services and drive them towards generating revenue to reach your goals.
